Best Places in Europe for Engagement Photos
An engagement photography guide through Italy, France and Spain
There is something special about taking your engagement photos somewhere that already feels like part of an adventure.
Maybe you're traveling through Europe before the wedding. Maybe you're looking for photographs for your save the dates or wedding website. Or maybe you simply want to remember this short, exciting chapter between “yes” and “I do.”
And Europe gives you an incredible amount of possibilities.

As a destination photographer based in Europe, these are some of my favorite places to create engagement photographs , not only because they are beautiful, but because each one creates a completely different feeling.
1. Lake Como, Italy
Best for: cinematic, elegant and romantic engagement photos
Lake Como is one of those places that almost doesn't feel real.
Mountains fall directly into the water, historic villas sit along the shoreline, little Italian towns appear between them, and wooden boats move quietly across the lake.
For engagement photographs, I especially love the contrast here.
You can begin with something elegant and architectural and later move onto the water, where everything becomes much more spontaneous.
A private boat is probably one of my favorite ways to photograph Lake Como. There is movement everywhere , the wind, the water, your clothes , so instead of constantly thinking about posing, you can simply move around and enjoy being together.
And that is usually when my favorite photographs happen.
The feeling: refined, cinematic, intimate, old-world Italy.
Perfect for couples who love: elegant fashion, beautiful architecture, mountains, water and photographs that feel like scenes from a film.
My photographer's tip
Don't try to fit everything Lake Como has to offer into one hour.
Choosing one beautiful location and combining it with time on the lake can create a much stronger story than rushing between several famous spots.
Light also changes the lake completely. If possible, I would always plan the session around the softer hours of the day.
2. Venice, Italy
Best for: romantic, artistic and timeless engagement photos
Venice is completely different.
There are very few places where simply walking from one street to another can give you so many different photographs.
Tiny bridges. Quiet canals. Old façades. Reflections in the water. Little passages where suddenly there is no one around.
For me, Venice isn't about photographing every famous landmark.
It's about getting a little lost.
I love photographing couples walking through the smaller streets and letting Venice appear naturally around them. It makes the photographs feel less like a tourist session and more like a morning the two of you actually spent in Italy.
Go early.
This is probably my biggest recommendation for Venice.
Early in the morning, the city feels completely different. Streets that will be full only a few hours later can feel almost private.
And there is something incredibly romantic about watching Venice slowly wake up together.
The feeling: poetic, intimate, nostalgic and unmistakably Italian.
Perfect for couples who love: architecture, fashion, movement and photographs that feel effortless rather than posed.
France
France doesn't have only one visual identity.
That's exactly why I love photographing here.
You can have classic architecture and elegant streets, countryside, châteaux, Mediterranean landscapes or small villages , sometimes within the same trip.
For engagement photographs, that means France can become almost anything you want it to be.
3. Paris, France
Best for: classic European romance with an editorial feeling
Of course Paris deserves a place on this list.
But I don't think your engagement photographs in Paris necessarily need to be about the Eiffel Tower.
Some of my favorite photographs happen in the spaces between the landmarks.
Crossing a street. Sitting outside a café. Walking beside the Seine. Getting dressed up for no particular reason. Finding beautiful architecture and letting Paris exist quietly in the background.
If you want the Eiffel Tower, we can absolutely make it part of the story.
But Paris becomes much more interesting when we allow the photographs to feel like your own little day in the city rather than a checklist of monuments.
The feeling: romantic, editorial, sophisticated and timeless.
4. The South of France
Best for: warm, relaxed and romantic engagement photos
The South of France gives engagement photographs an entirely different energy.
The pace becomes slower.
The light becomes warmer.
Instead of grand city architecture, you can have old villages, stone houses, vineyards, Mediterranean landscapes and long summer evenings.
I particularly love this option for couples who are already traveling through France and want their engagement session to become part of the trip itself.
It doesn't have to feel like an appointment with a photographer.
We can walk, explore, stop somewhere beautiful and let the photographs happen around the experience.
The feeling: warm, effortless, intimate and European summer.
Spain
5. Spain
Best for: color, architecture and Mediterranean light
Spain brings something completely different to an engagement session.
There is warmth and movement everywhere.
Depending on where you travel, your photographs can include historic streets and dramatic architecture or completely change direction toward the Mediterranean.
For couples who want something a little less traditional than Paris or Italy, I think Spain is an incredible alternative.
Especially if you want the photographs to feel alive rather than overly formal.
The feeling: warm, energetic, romantic and relaxed.
So, where should you take your engagement photos in Europe?
I don't think there is one best location.
I think there is a location that makes sense for you.
If you imagine black tie, a wooden boat and something cinematic, I would choose Lake Como.
If you want photographs that feel poetic, intimate and slightly nostalgic, choose Venice.
If you love fashion, architecture and timeless European romance, Paris.
For something slower, warmer and more relaxed, the South of France.
And if you're drawn to Mediterranean light, movement and color, consider Spain.
The location should never overpower the two of you.
It should simply create the world around your story.
Your engagement photos don't have to happen where you live.
One of my favorite things about engagement sessions is that there are almost no rules.
They can happen months before your wedding.
They can become your save-the-date photographs.
They can happen during a trip you're already planning.
Or they can simply be an excuse to spend a beautiful day somewhere you've always wanted to visit together.
